Protein Powder in Baking: The Beginner’s Guide to Protein-Packing Your Recipes

Protein Powder in Baking: The Beginner’s Guide to Protein-Packing Your Recipes

Wake up to the possibility of satisfying your sweet tooth and your health needs! Smash Melon Protein Powder provides just that with a neutral taste and exceptional protein content within one, single, predictable ingredient.

We’re going to help you understand the basics of mixing and measuring, and you’ll be glad to know that it’s not as complicated as it seems. When done right, it will provide a protein boost with little to no impact on the flavor, texture, and moisture of the final product. Once you finish this guide, you’ll be ready to craft healthy and delicious, protein-packed recipes.

General Rules

1. Cutting the flour in existing recipes.

The easiest method for beginners to get comfortable with this is “cutting”, or diluting existing ingredients with protein powder. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend cutting ⅛ to ¼ of the flour or dry mix in existing recipes with protein powder. This will have just a small impact on the taste and texture of the final product while providing a few extra grams of protein to each treat. Feel free to increase the protein powder amount incrementally each time you bake the recipe until you find the sweet spot of taste and nutrition.

2. Balance Your Ratios: Wet and Dry Ingredients

Wet-to-dry ingredient ratios are extremely important to maintaining texture, whether it be a homemade recipe or a premade mix. Generally, the wet ingredients are lacking because of the addition of the dry ingredient of protein powder, however you can also go the opposite direction if you overcompensate. In pre-made mixes, if you don't want to cut or throw away any of the dry mix, just add an equal ratio of the suggested wet ingredients

If you feel like getting creative and creating a recipe from scratch, it’s a best practice to start off with a small batch or even multiple batches with small variations. This approach gives you some wiggle room to make mistakes and ensures you won’t waste ingredients or become discouraged if your ratios are off.

P.S. We listed our favorite wet ingredients below!

Our Favorite Wet Ingredients to Bake With

  • Eggs - A classic ingredient that provides high levels of protein and a good liquid texture to any mix.
  • Buttermilk - Don’t be offput by the name, as it is typically lower in fat than whole milk. It’s sweetness makes it a tough liquid to drink but an amazing ingredient for baking, leaving a lighter and fluffier end product than traditional other dairy liquids.
  • Liquid-y Peanut Butter - We love to mix powdered peanut butter with a little extra water as it keeps the recipe to simple ingredients and provides a wet ingredient for the powder. You can also heat up peanut or any other nut butter to give it a liquid texture.
  • Greek Yogurt - Another classic, with high protein and the option to add flavors to a dish.
  • Mashed Ripe Bananas - Adds sweetness along with other benefits such as potassium. The riper the better!
